I started working on a new project: CU Bench, a peer benchmarking tool. This is the early version, and I’m sharing it because I’d like feedback and ideas as I keep building on it.
CU Bench is built on public NCUA 5300 call report data. It covers every federally insured credit union, five quarters back, across 38 metrics. It updates on its own as NCUA publishes each quarter, so new filings and any revisions to prior quarters flow through without me touching it.
The part I care most about is the peer group. You define it yourself using asset band, state, NCUA region, charter type, low-income designation, and MDI status. From there it shows where a credit union lands within that group on every metric, and you can sort by largest gaps first to see what stands out.
The goal was to compare against credit unions that actually resemble yours, not just whoever happens to be on a list. Most peer comparison is either a set someone built years ago and never revisited, or a comparison against the entire industry. Neither one really answers the question you’re asking.
Before trusting any of it, I reconciled the output against our own NCUA Financial Performance Report. Net worth, ROA, net interest margin, delinquency, charge-offs, and loan-to-share all tie.
It’s still early. If you have a few minutes to look at it, I’d value your thoughts on what’s missing or what you’d actually use.
